Duke's HCD Column – 10-6-2011
Duke Rosendahl, Executive Director (REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION FROM THE HAZEN STAR)

Hazen’s Renaissance Zone committee has been kept busy with the approval of benefits for several new homebuilders planning to build in the RZ. With local and state benefits that pertain to a new home built in the zone it can mean several thousand dollars in savings. So maybe now is the time to think about that new first home or retirement home. There are developers looking to build your home, both local and non local. The latest is a planned unit development by Annabelle Homes which would be a 14 -15 acre development on Hazen’s west side. The plan includes single family homes, townhouses and commercial (adjacent to Main Street). Although the area is not in the RZ at this time, I hope to have it included by year end. If you are interested in how the development will take shape you stop by the office and get a glimpse.

With the hanging flowers gone and the flower pots soon to be off the sidewalks, Main Street will seem a little bare. Hopefully other nifty ideas will pop up to create a nice atmosphere for the downtown area or anywhere else for that matter. I still yearn to see the trees on main getting lights that can virtually light up those beauties all year round in the evenings. Maybe the next time Main Street needs some overhauling we can get the electricity set up for the trees as well as main street events. Maybe even a new sidewalk design and look could be accomplished to take us into the next 50 years or so. I guess we’ll see. I have had the opportunity to provide technical assistance to help Hettinger with their Main Street tree project. That mission is complete in Hettinger and I sounds like people are excited are quite excited, as they should be. These activities all make communities (including ours) stand out nicely among others that haven’t taken the initiative.

I have to share that I have heard many times from people all over the state about how nice Hazen presents itself. You should all be proud of that fact. Hazen does look really good. We just need to keep adding that kind of value. Every nook and cranny in town could use a little scrutiny concerning improvements or simply sprucing up. And while all that is going on HCD will continue to work on additional projects that will employ people and keep them here as long as possible.

Combining community development and job development together is a great combination that will help cinch up a solid future for the community and its citizens.

I hope you all have time to enjoy falls many splendors.
