Trails at Knife River Indian Villages NHS The Two Rivers Trail Trailhead is located just south off of County Road 18 on the north end of the park. The trail begins in an open grassland with agricultural fields on the east side. Much of the grass is smooth brome, but there are a few large stands of big bluestem and other prairie grasses and flowers mixed in. The trail follows the Knife River to the south end of the park. There is an intersection where one can walk .25 miles to see the Missouri River or continue down the trail to the loop. The loop continues through a nice riparian forest with lots of green ash, box elder and some willow and large cottonwoods. From the trail there are nice views of both the Knife and the Missouri Rivers. At the southern tip of the trail is where the Knife River flows into the Missouri River. Total distance is 6.2 miles. This trail is groomed for cross country skiing in the winter. The North Forest Trail also begins from County Road 18 and heads north. Much of this trail is through bottomland forest with green ash, box elder, and some willow and cottonwood. Upon entering the forest, one can chose to walk .1 mile on the Big Hidatsa Trail to the Big Hidatsa Village. The North Forest Trail consists of few smaller loops, which allows for a shorter hike. At the north of the forest the trail leads up to the North Prairie, the highest point in the park. This area contains the finest stand of native prairie in the park and has spectacular views of the Missouri River Valley. Total distance is 5 miles. The North Forest Trail is groomed for skiing in the winter. The Villages Trail begins at the Visitor Center and leads to two village sites, the Lower Hidatsa Village and the Sakakawea Village ( Awatixa Village). There is a loop at the second village site includes a walk along the Knife River. The round trip distance is 1.3 miles. While at the north end of the loop, one can walk to the Fish’n’ Hole (Awatixa parking area) which is .2 miles long.
